About Double-up Outfitters:
Born and raised in south central New Hampshire, John grew up with a
fly fishing rod in hand, and most family members can’t recall a time when its line
wasn’t wet. A story: At age five, when John’s parents thought he was lost, as panic was about
to set in, they spotted him at the far end of the front pasture on their farm, sneaking up on
a pool full of brook trout in the small stream that ran through the field, his dad's rod and
reel in hand. The rest is history, and as fellow guides and friends will attest, there is no
water around, no secret channel or seasonal backwater that John and his guides haven't since
scouted, scoured and hand-picked for his fishing
John has been guiding in the Missoula area for over 19 years.
Starting his career as one of the top guides in two of Missoula’s “big shops,” and even
filling in occasionally on whitewater trips, John quickly established himself as one of the
most innovative and hard-working guides in the area. He spent his off-seasons working with
Montana Fly Company at their Costa Rica location, teaching fly tying techniques and patterns
to employees. He also worked at one of Missoula’s ski areas, making snow and grooming trails,
drove a UPS truck, and even put in a season on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska.
Then, after many years of guiding for other outfitters John decided that guiding
fishing trips wasn't about talking clients into buying an expensive rod and reel after a day on the
water, or pushing a five star lodge meal on them. To John and his experienced staff of guides, a
float trip is all about showing people some incredible trout fishing in an unbelievably beautiful
setting. Understanding client expectations is also an integral part of being a guide, and John and
his guides pride themselves in doing just that. We take time to match clients up with guides
who will suit their personalities and angling experience, so that the guide’s joy of floating the
river, and just spending another day in Montana, becomes the client’s joy as well.
John is the originator of many fly patterns that have been
used by just about every knowledgeable guide in the area. His "Half-Down
tm " series of flies, along with many
others, are used and copied by fly shops and fishermen all over the country. Montana Fly
company carries these patterns, and you can view their site, as well as John's flies on MFC's
web page in our links
